Roles and types of users
The organisation assigns one or more roles to each account. Roles decide which menus and actions a person sees. This page explains the categories. For the exact menu-by-menu matrix, see Reference: roles and visibility.
Consuming and producing users
Consuming users use APIs that others have published. They browse the catalog, create applications, obtain credentials and call services. They work in consumer teams that share applications.
Producing users publish and maintain APIs. They are members of a backend team, which owns APIs in the catalog and is the contact for consumers.
The same person is both a consumer and a producer when they belong to both kinds of team.
Signed-in user
A signed-in user without the administrator role sees Home, APIs, My Applications and My Teams, and Documentation and My Analytics when those are enabled for them. They do not see Admin or organisation Settings, and they do not edit permission groups.
Administrator
Administrators do everything a signed-in user can, and also register environments, maintain permission groups, approve pending applications, inspect logs and manage organisation-wide settings.
CI/CD
The CI/CD role publishes API specifications from automation. The API-dex CLI uses this role to upload and update specifications from a pipeline. In the browser, a CI/CD account sees the upload area on the APIs page.
Subscription manager
Where the organisation has enabled company and subscription management, subscription managers see Companies in the main navigation and manage company-level access to applications and subscriptions there.
Business analyst
Business analysts see My Analytics and read usage across applications without holding the administrator role.
